Just off Bleecker Street, encased by three austere, grey apartment buildings - which are somewhat ironically named Silver Towers - stands a Picasso sculpture made of 60-tonnes of cement, and named 'Bust of Sylvette'. This imposing sculpture is an enlarged version of the smaller busts created by Picasso that Carl Nesjar turned into this 36-feet high artwork in 1968.
The sandblasted cement surface of Sylvette perfectly accompanies the harsh tower blocks that surround her. As you walk round the square, the folds in the sculpture alter her appearance; her expression changes as you see her from various perspectives; but her many eyes are always staring out over Bleecker Street, and her heavy, bushy ponytail keeps her head held high.
